Humans Through Alien Eyes

They inhabit fragile, constantly-dying bodies. More than three-quarters of their mass is fluid, yet they are functionally solid. As suggested by this contradiction of terms, they are exceptionally flexible and mobile entities. However, they are also quite resilient against all manner of threat.

They require sustenance at least once per full rotation of their home planet, or they become diminished in both mental and physical capacities. They consume, as is to be expected, a significant quantity of fluids to maintain an optimal balance. However, they also consume organic matter, generally obtaining such from other deceased life-forms.

When damaged, they often vocalize to signify distress. Depending on the exact kind of damage, they may also secrete fluids. However, it is not unheard-of for their greasy outermost layer to interfere with the secretion of fluids, so instead, such fluids will gather underneath the outermost layer, resulting in discoloration of same. If damage of either nature occurs in the topmost portion of the body, cerebral and/or motor functions may become impaired, resulting in debilitations up to and including death. Damage can also occur in the solid portions of the body, most commonly in the form of fractures or breaks in the bone structure. This may also result in disability.

In regards to physical form, they are generally symmetrical, with two of almost every major piece, although often, the "superfluous" second part is still vital to normal function. To elaborate on this point: they are possessed of two eyes, two ears, two brains, two arms, two legs, two hands, two feet. Even the external parts that are not duplicated are, instead, bifurcated, such as the nose (with its two nostrils) and tongue (subtly split along a center line.) In addition, even several internal organs are also duplicated, and in most cases, the organism is capable of normal function even after the removal of the superfluous unit.

They walk with an impractical, bipedal gait, in which they deliberately throw themselves off-balance, then catch themselves, using the forward momentum so generated to propel themselves along. While walking, they often appear as though they are about to collapse entirely. Were it not for developed reflexes, not to say an incredibly acute sense of balance, it is apparent that they would.

The human condition seems to be one of embracing dualism and inconsistency.

Culturally, they tend to be very warlike and often will not surrender except to improve their own position.

Use caution.

This Last Weekend

Or - if you don't like a certain Internet meme, you can stop reading here and come back Wednesday for the Tarot motifs.

The Black Rook fell, and when he went, he went to Retirony.

I feel like I've lost a friend, which is ... odd. I've never met the man, never done more than trade words in passing. But the world seems ... slightly less safe now that there's one less Player in the Game.

I've got this odd ... belief system that's sprung up without me being fully aware it's happening. The idea is, the more people the Tall Man is following, the safer nobodies like me are - even if we actively choose to taunt Him from our safe, sheltered homes. (This whole thing being moronic anyway. I'm well aware it's just a meme gah.)

I wouldn't be a very interesting protagonist anyway. I've got no friends IRL, I don't remember dialogue, and the "Runner slowly goes insane while ignoring The Rules" plot looks to have been pretty much done to death. No? Yes.

I dunno. Finished actually reading The Tutorial, and then I finished Vivere Disce and left a nice little comment or something. Now there's a happy blog, though, isn't there. Didn't I mention somewhere that the idea of Proxies was more chilling to me than things which should not be?

My sense of time, location, and balance are all already fucked, what's reality itself thrown into the mix, anyway?

But humans are bastards. That's unquestionably true. And giving someone who's already a bit unhinged a reason to target me seems ... unwise.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: there's really nothing the Slender Man could do to me that a particularly determined psycho with a grudge couldn't - and there are lots and lots of those running around, while there's only one of Him.

There's a reason M warns against the other homeless people.

Oh. And the other night some fucker got into and rifled through my car. Thanks, asshole.

Fucking drug neighborhood.

Fuck.

I wonder if you can see the Slender Man in any other way than film if you are not his intended victim.

If the Slender Man was real and he abducts children and he always appears on film why is He not in more proud parents' home videos?

IT'S SPLENDOR MAN!!! :D

I can hear the music someone else is listening to at the other end of the table and only just cannot make out the words; it is very LOUD.

Wanna sleep. By the time this is read I will have moved to an easier work schedule and my brain will be less mushy. I am so tired and it is hard to keep my eyes open.

I can see the reflection of the overhead lights and my hair in my glasses which is cool. I watch shadows and reflections as much as the real world.

Obsession

Since right now I have an unhealthy fascination with someone tall, dark, and faceless (with tentacles), I figure now's as good a time as any to post my thoughts on it.

Sure.

Who says there's just one Operator/Slender Man?

Sure, he/it/they can bend reality around one slender appendage or another, but given how widely spread his/its/their activities are becoming, as well as the variance in his/its/their behavior between blogs, vlogs, etc., it's not unreasonable to suggest there might be more than one of these abominations wandering about. This can also explain differences in Slendy's stated abilities. Hell, H(a)unting all-but states it outright.

Alternatively, there is just one Slender Man, and he's just messing with us.

Most depictions are downright malevolent, though.

It's like Cthulhu or a feral, man-eating lion or something. Killing people and abducting kids seems to be more or less what Slendy does. The vlogs and blogs from people who survive seem to be as much about Slendy observing them as the other way around - it's like he/it/they is/are just too alien to call him/it/them "evil" - who says he/it/they ascribe to any morality, much less a human-centric one? Which isn't to say he/it/they are harmless, or that sane people with any regard whatsoever for their own wellbeing should seek him/it/them out: see also feral, man-eating lion.

Incidentally, I don't know if this ever came up, but I write in a notebook before posting. I've always had a habit of decorating the margins, but now in addition to the random eyeballs and emoticons I normally doodle, I'm making notes of relevant Tropes and sketching Slender Men and Operator symbols.

Comforting Thoughts for Restful Sleep

Even if the Slender Man were to turn up, I'd never know it: I get sick a lot anyway, it is balls cold up here all the time in the winter, and I tend to avoid cameras of any shape, size, or description (I'm not precisely proud of my appearance).

I'm also a very boring person in real life. Seriously. I go to work, I come home, I play World of Warcraft, and sometimes I watch movies and listen to music. I'd probably bore the hell out of any real-life stalker, supernatural or not.

Also, after getting over the initial shock of someone with no face and tentacles getting into my house past the locks and burglar alarm, and after possibly attempting to bludgeon it to death, I'd likely be more curious than afraid, and more interested in opening some kind of dialogue than fleeing for my life. (How does his/its Alien Geometries work? How does it see without a face? How does it laugh without a mouth - or does it? Can I learn to be a supernatural ninja?)

Finally, I am a very oblivious person, so I'd totally end up not noticing I was being stalked, anyway.

Despite all this, it's probably apparent that paranoia is a persistent problem for me.

And I'm developing a bit of a cough ....

Slender Chess!

Eh, I'm not doing anything else, and this idea struck me as awesome and/or amusing while I was waking up around noonish today, so have a non-standard update!

Slenderman Chess

Pieces

Black starts with only one piece, representing Slendy - the queen.

White starts with the normal selection of pieces, and goes first always.

You will want surplus pawns of both colors.

Goals

The goal of the black player is to eliminate all white pieces from the playing field, while the goal of the white player is to prevent the black queen from being able to move (I'm not sure this is actually possible and would require playtesting, which I don't have the patience to attempt I think this might actually be only possible if you fill up the entire board a la Reversi with the amended pawn rules).

Rules

This game is played with a standard chess board, (with as many pawns of either color as necessary: use pennies or something if you run out of pawns) and all rules not explicitly outlined here are borrowed directly from Chess (the, uh, non-Slendyful version).

The game does not end if the king is captured; black does not even start with a king.

The black queen (and only the black queen) can, at any time, teleport to any location on the playing field not currently under attack by a white piece (Slendy cannot move into check; it's called Offscreen Teleportation for a reason.) However, the black queen is not required to move out of check, and is allowed to capture white pieces that are not currently in a place that would otherwise be under attack.

When the black player takes a piece, remove the white piece from the playing field and replace it with a corresponding black piece (exceptions noted below), then move the new black piece to a new location of the black player's choosing that is not currently occupied.

When the white player takes a piece, remove the black piece from the playing field and replace it with a corresponding white piece (exceptions noted below), then move the new white piece to a new location of the white player's choosing that is not currently occupied.

If the black queen is captured, do not replace it with a white queen, but instead move it back to its starting point, instantly capturing any white piece occupying that space. Any black piece occupying that space will move instantly to a place of the black player's choosing.

Since the white player can't regenerate the white queen via normal methods, if the white queen is captured, instead replace it with a black pawn. The white queen can only be regenerated by a white pawn making it to the other end of the playing field. This feat can only be performed if the white queen is no longer on the playing field.

Soooo ... what do you think? I think it sounds like it might be amusing anyway - a cross between Chess and Reversi with a dash of Cosmic Horror. Feel free to adopt it and apply your own house rules!

I__See__You

I did not piss off a creepy camera deity.

I slept with my light on last night, and it kept me awake a bit - but I couldn't have gotten to sleep at all without it.

This morning, I am thoroughly exhausted. I kept drifting off, only to jerk awake long enough to make sure I was really alone in my room, seriously. I remember groaning because I saw the alarm clock at 4am.

I want to take a nap.

So, what I've learned from this. I should not watch Paranoia Fuel videos before bed.

Like ever.

A God's Log: A New World

So, playing Black and White again.

I've sorted out that the creature can learn to buff itself, it's just stupid - I ended up spending half an hour teaching Kitty how to cast this one, last miracle before we left the island, to a chorus of death, death, death, and when the creature's finally learned the miracle, I set him to rest at the temple - whereupon I lost him again.

Death .... I figured out why all of my villagers were dying, anyway: it's either old age or starvation. The second village we came to is simply not producing enough food to sustain their numbers, apparently.

While waiting for my creature to recover, I discovered that replaying the rock-throwing minigame gives you some more one-shot water miracles. Nevermind that I have a water miracle dispenser. I found some other one-shot miracles due to the fireflies diving under rocks and trees - so far I have three forest miracles, two wood miracles, two fireball miracles, and one lightning miracle.

Time to go.

I have to find my creature again, because apparently he likes to wander - and when I finally do find my creature, he's collapsed from starvation because apparently he hasn't learned how to feed himself yet. Damn carnivore.

Clicking the last gold story scroll causes the Guide creature to tell you all about something called the "Creeds," brings Nemesis to my tiny little island, and is promptly incinerated horribly.

Death ....

So, that brings us to Island 2. What fun.

Oh. And near as I can tell, the Creature has no idea what to do with his newly-learned buff spell.

More Reasons to Dislike Level 58 DKs

So my last post was a rant about the PVE reasons DKs are evil.

Now for a different approach.

As you probably know, I'm an avid Roleplayer. It's interactive storytelling, basically, and it's intensely fun - when you do it right.

It is incredibly rare for Death Knights (especially level 58 Death Knights) to be doing it right.

I have a theory about that. It goes like this: in lore, Death Knights are incredibly powerful, and this is reflected by the class's starting level and array of skills. They are also the most triumphant anti-heroes of the piece. As a faction, they were more instrumental in defeating the Lich King than either the Horde or the Alliance, second only to the Argent Crusade for sheer, brutal effectiveness. Death Knights are damned - and also damned cool.

This combination of factors attracts young people with God complexes to the class. The high level is a cheat toward perceived power, even in roleplay. It's actually rather telling that even RP guilds often have a minimum level set for DKs well above their level 58 introduction into the wider World of Warcraft. The level also grants them access to a variety of clothing options. The cooler you look, the more powerful you are perceived to be, the theory goes, and since Death Knights are so fascinating and overpowered to begin with, as well as actually looking cool, Death Knight player characters generally end up not being cool after all.

To put it bluntly, ever level 58 DK I have seen roleplaying (with few notable exceptions) have done so poorly, and fall into one of three categories: the Death Knight godmoder, the Death Knight eRPer, and the "not-a-Death Knight" godmoder/eRPer.

And, since the death of the Lich King, Death Knights have stopped being particularly lore-relevant! The only thing we get about Death Knights post-Cataclysm is a little blurb about Thassarian and Koltira in WPL, which tells us that since their grand mission is up, most of them have pretty much just joined whatever faction they started out as ... maybe.

TL;DR: The Death Knight class tends to be just plain bad for RP, and bad roleplayers flock to it.

Hilarity Ensues

Oh wow.

So my friends communicate almost entirely through RealID broadcasts, it seems, and in doing so, they have been going on and on, endlessly, about this ... thing they'd discovered all together, because hey - just because they really care, whatever they get, they share. Right? Right.

scrape

I hadn't ever heard of it before, so one of them links me it, and I begin reading like the endless pit of ravening I am. In all it took me a couple of days because I have the attention span of a flea on drugs. Not that I'm ever on drugs, mind. Drugs are bad, mmmkay?

So ... this collaborative story-thing answered a question I didn't even know I had, which is, "Why is there an NPC named Tednug with a Cat - Scratchfever walking down this particular path?" Not that I didn't kind of get the joke and laugh a little bit myself regardless before I caught the reference. But now it's just so much better. With harpies. I'm just a little bit saddened there isn't a TVTropes page for it yet, after apparently a year later.

I also discovered a nice little bit of fanfiction through TVTropes the other day - a slightly Alternate Universe Firefly piece called Forward. I'm not finished yet, but it's something on my To Do list. My biggest 'gripe' with it, such as it is, is it bringing characters who canonically died horribly back from the dead - and I can suspend disbelief for that. There is something that feels just a bit off in places - but overall, I find it fairly true to the series.

MetaThought

Edit, March 2: How the hell did I miss the post title being misspelled?  Double-u-tea-eff, mate.

There's just no simple way to translate this all into printed text. Nonlinear thought tends to be difficult that way.

Just a simple free-write to get the creative juices running in a pseudo-productive way.
